Punching its Weight — Cadillac Hits Back with 2013 ATS

They say in some spheres that less is more.

This is certainly the case when it comes to compact cars, which are luxury brands’ biggest sellers.

Now, with the launch of the 2013 Cadillac ATS in the Middle East, Cadillac are hitting back at BMW, Mercedes and Audi with a compact car of their own.

People move up to luxury cars by entering the compact market: Cadillac want to strike while that iron is hot. How?

The Reassurance of Safety

Not only does the ATS hit hard: it can take the hits. In the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) crash tests, the ATS achieved five stars — the maximum — in each category it was tested in: frontal crash, side crash, rollover, and overall.

In places like the UAE, where the dangerous driving on the roads makes car insurance as essential as it is mandatory, it’s good to know the vehicle can handle a bump or two.

Cadillac ATS Detroit 2012 Revealed

Cadillac have eventually unveiled the latest family member the ATS which is set to battle the 3-Series BMW and Mercedes C-Class.

The exterior is very much like its CTS father with the usual array of led clustered headlights and a cheeky designed integrated boot spoiler.

The agressive front has active vent grills which close at motorway speed to improve vehicle aerodynamics and to lower drag and in turn fuel economy.

The cabin’s infotainment system which offers a wealth of connectivity features including a touch sensitive display along with USB/Bluetooth/SDHC for all your connected devices. To compliment the impressive the digital instrument cluster includes an optional GPS navigation.

Powering the new Caddy will be the usual Sporty GM offerings:-

The turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 270 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque
The 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 200 hp and 188 lb-ft of torque
The 3.6-liter V6 with 318 hp and 267 lb-ft of torque

These will be paired up to a six speed manual or an automatic and for the arctics AWD will be an additional option.

Handling will be taken control by the addition of magnetic dampers and an impressive kerb weight of under 1600kg.

No pricing has been revealed yet…

Watch as Cadillac develops and refines its new ATS on the legendary Autobahn and the demanding Nürburgring.

In the second episode of our Web series, an elite team of drivers and engineers run the 2013 ATS through its paces.

There is no news on powerunit used on this car.

But with a recent mystery email it is touted to be the same 2 litre turbo as the Vauxhall VXR.

The guys at the GM division Cadillac have released another video teaser of the 2013 ATS under test at the Nürburgring.

The new ATS sedan will slot beneath the CTS in the Cadillac lineup, competing with vehicles from Mercedes and BMW.

The ATS’ will ride on an all-new RWD and AWD architecture billed as the Alpha platform, Like the larger CTS, the ATS will be available in sedan, coupe and wagon body styles, although the Cabriolet has been cancelled.

ATS will get a turbocharged four-cylinder. The entry-level ATS is slated to come equipped with a 270 hP version of GM’s turbocharged 2.0L engine used in the Astra OPC, backed by an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Here are the first spyshots of the 2013 Cadillac ATS during testing at its Nurburgring handling center. From the look, the 2013 Cadillac ATS sedan prototype seems almost ready for production by the mule less looks.

The car shares some of its styling cues from its CTS older brother.

No news from the power unit of this car but we expect it t be around the 250hp with a rumoured V with around 380hp.
