Mille Miglia – Sit Shotgun with Sterling Moss 360 Degree Film

Sterling Moss
Mercedes-Benz-300-SLR

Today the 2015 running of the Mille Miglia begins and Mercedes-Benz has combined the old and the new with the creation of a cutting edge 360 degree film to mark a special anniversary.

A little over 60 years ago, on 1st May 1955, Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson won the Mille Miglia in a Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR – number 722. They drove flat out for 10 hours, 7 minutes and 48 seconds and averaged 98 miles per hour – all on public roads.

It was recognised as one of the greatest feats of driving ever – their record still stands today.

In 1955, the W 196 R racers were the most advanced cars in the world – they won every race they finished and used cutting edge materials.

At a time when road cars would struggle to hit 70 mph, the W 196 R could exceed 180 mph. Today only eight examples still exist, but now and again they’re let loose…

Sixty years on, Sir Stirling Moss has been reunited with the 300 SLR number 722, on the very same roads on which he won.

The film released today allows you to control the camera and watch from nearly any angle as Sir Stirling Moss takes ‘722’ on the roads he and Denis Jenkinson set records on. Three dimensional sound makes the footage even more vivid.

Dynamo Sets Track Alight In Mercedes-Benz Challenge

Dynamo vs. Coulthard
Last night renowned magician, Dynamo, stunned Formula One™ legend David Coulthard by completing a blindfolded, fire-laden run in a Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG… impressive in itself, but it proved to be a prelude to a much bigger mindreading feat.

The specially created circuit was first driven by David Coulthard, who set the lap pace of 38.57 seconds. Dynamo then attempted to beat the time whilst blindfolded, with parts of the track set on fire, and with David in the passenger seat.

Getting around the track unscathed was impressive enough to David, but the real awe came when Dynamo revealed the true outcome in the never-seen-before challenge – Dynamo had correctly predicted and spelt out David’s guess of his lap time, 1:25, in flames, across the track.

Fangio's - 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196

The 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196R Formula 1 Single-Seater breaks the following auction world records:

• Most valuable motor car ever sold at auction
• Most valuable Formula 1 racing car ever sold
• Most valuable Mercedes-Benz

Automotive history was made at the Bonhams Goodwood Festival of Speed Sale today, when the car that took five-time champion Juan Manuel Fangio to the second of his Formula 1 world titles achieved a record-breaking figure of £19,601,500 (US$29,650,095, €22,701,864).

The car becomes the most valuable motor vehicle ever sold at auction, beating the previous record of £10,086,400 set by a Ferrari in 2011.

Robert Brooks, Bonhams Chairman, said: “I have handled some of the world’s most desirable and important motor cars during a motoring auction career spanning five decades, but I have reached a peak today with this legendary Grand Prix car. It was a personal privilege to preside over the sale of this vehicle, which is not only one of the most significant motor cars of the 20th century, but also the most important historic Grand Prix racing car ever offered for sale.”

Doug Nye, racing historian, said: “If he were here today Fangio would shake his head and smile his slow smile. He was a humble man, originally a mechanic from a potato town in Argentina – and he never forgot his roots. As a driver, he was simply a genius. As a man he had no enemies. He was universally loved, even by those he regularly beat on track. No standard-setting sportsman could have a better epitaph.

Black Falcon SLS AMG Wins 2013 Nurburgring 24H
The Black Falcon team of Bernd Schneider, Sean Edward/Jeroen Bleekemolen/Nicki Thiim have won the 2013 Nurburgring 24 Hours with a incredibly tight margin of two minutes 39 seconds. It was the first ever win at the event for Mercedes after many races at the VLN improved the handling on the infamous circuit.

Heavy rain forced race control during the night to interrupt the race for more than nine hours. Numerous accidents caused a treacherous mix of oil, mud and rain water on the track.

Coming in second place was the BMW Z4 GT3 Driven by Maxime Martin (BE) who brought the number 25 BMW Sports Trophy Team car home. As well as Martin, Yelmer Buurman (NL), Andrea Piccini (IT) and Richard Göransson (SE) were also in action over the course of the eventful race.

After 88 laps of the 25.378-kilometre circuit, the runner-up car was 2:39.781 minutes behind the winning Mercedes SLS.

Mercedes Benz S Class Official and S-Class Coupe Spyshot’s

S Class Coupe Spyshots

Well here it is the new Mercedes Benz S-Type in all its official glory, but just down the road in Stuttgart the Mercedes R&D department have been secretly testing the S-Type Coupe.

This evening, the new flagship for luxurious motoring landed in Hamburg on board an Airbus A300-600 DHL cargo plane. Mercedes-Benz had the new S-Class flown in exclusively from its birthplace in Stuttgart for its world premiere at Airbus in Finkenwerder. At the delivery centre for the Airbus A380, the world’s largest passenger aircraft and a benchmark in travel comfort, Mercedes-Benz unveiled its new luxury saloon in front of around 750 international guests from the worlds of politics, industry and media. Flanked by the 20 current Mercedes-Benz models and musically accompanied by the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra, the new top-of-the-line model from Stuttgart rolled across the tarmac as part of a spectacular show. In a dazzling display, it took up its position at the head of the Mercedes-Benz family and drove onto the stage with its first passenger, the global superstar Alicia Keys.

And the S-type Coupe was applauded by our elusive but heroic spy shooter, the S-Type is the true embodiment of a modern luxury saloon: it is an exclusive first-class mobile office akin to a business jet and also an exquisite centre of well-being at the same time. While achieving fuel-consumption and emissions values that appeared utopian just a few years ago even for a mid-size car, it raises the standard for automotive safety equipment to a new level.
